Winter hair care tips for you:
We all love rains but that’s also a season that demands extra care for our tresses. We get hair stylist Coleen Khan (hair expert, P&G) to help us with monsoon special hair care tips.
A) The kind of comb one should use during monsoon?
In combs, you generally have two options. You have the wide tooth comb which is mainly used for de-tangling. It’s also good to use as a conditioning comb. You can use this while you have conditioner in the hair. Use this to evenly spread the conditioner.
Another comb is a pick or teasing comb which adds volume to your hair. For example if you have a perm or curls and you want to add volume on the root, this comb would be ideal.
In the monsoon there is a lot of humidity and it can get very windy, both these factors can contribute in tangling your hair hence I would suggest keeping a wide toothed comb handy.
B) The oil one should use during monsoon?
There are lots of oils in the market that can help with your hair this monsoon. But one must remember if your hair is very weak and you do a rigorous oil massage you are damaging your hair more. Also, what happens with oil is when you oil your hair very often you tend to over shampoo to remove the oil. This does a lot of damaged to your hair. Hence put very little oil, massage it in with the tips of your fingers and use a gentle shampoo.
C) The shampoo one should use during monsoon?
Basically you must keep your hair and scalp clean in the monsoon. Try and avoid getting your hair wet in the rains, as the pollutants in the rain may weaken the shaft bonds, making your hair dull and limp. So cover your hair before going out to protect them from humidity. Use a shampoo and conditioner that strengthens your hair from the root to the tip. I would recommend using Wella Professionals Age Ensure Resist strengthening shampoo for vulnerable hair. This creamy shampoo helps strengthen and protect the weakened surface layer of the hair, leaving it irresistibly smooth.
D) Special care for Frizzy hair.
During monsoon, the humidity level is very high so your hair is bound to frizz. Also, your hair tends to get wet and generally we don’t tend to wash our hair every time it gets wet. Very often one will simply towel dry their hair which adds to the frizz. You should use a slightly stronger conditioner and definitely a serum to combat frizzy hair. Wella has a shampoo, serum and mask for dry and damaged hair which works great in the monsoon i.e Wella Professionals Enrich Moisturizing shampoo, conditioner and Treatment mask for dry, damaged or straightened hair. To reduce the frizz, try using your finger pads while washing your hair and do not be very rigorous in washing.
E) The hair wash routine one should follow
There are few simple techniques one can keep in mind while washing:
– Make sure your hair is completely soaking wet before applying your shampoo.
– Try to use water which is at a medium temperature.
– Shampoo into the scalp of your hair using your fingertips and very gently circulate the shampoo into the scalp.
– Always rinse off the shampoo completely.
– When it comes to conditioning, don’t use too much conditioner and only condition the lengths and ends of hair.
– You can use a comb to spread the conditioner and end with a cold water rinse. This helps in lending a shine to your cuticles.
F) Diet: Dos and don’ts
Diet plays a very important role in hair care as it helps in protecting the hair and also strengthening the hair follicles. One should include things like eggs which are high in iron and protein, walnuts which are high in vitamin E and omega-3 and fatty acids. Fish like salmon and mackerel are also high in protein and omega-3. Spinach is excellent as its high in iron and beta-carotene. Dahi is high in vitamin D and helps in strengthening the hair follicle.
G) What to do to keep these evils away during monsoon?
1) Dandruff
During the monsoon dandruff tends to increase. Use an effective anti-dandruff shampoo to combat this problem such as the Head & Shoulders Cool Menthol. In the dull weather where the hair tends to fall prey to dandruff, Cool Menthol intensely refreshes and invigorates clean and dandruff free hair. I strongly recommend it as it contains natural menthol for a cooling sensation which stimulates the senses and keeps your scalp clean.
2) Oily scalp
A little grease or oil is normal for your hair, in fact it keeps it healthy but too much oil can make your hair look very dirty and greasy. In the monsoon, hair tends to get very oily due to the high humidity. Hence it’s imperative to use a shampoo specifically for oily hair such as Pantene’s Daily Moisture Repair which is fabulous for oily hair as it perfectly balances the PH level. You can use a conditioner for normal hair so there is a good balance between the shampoo and conditioner. One must wash the hair a little more often so your scalp is kept clean.
3) Hair fall
Wet hair is highly vulnerable to damage. So protect your hair from the rains! Wet hair swells, and in this state it is very fragile and therefore it’s easier for hair breakage or hair fall to occur. Brushes have many teeth, which are likely to hit a snag and pull hair to a breaking point. The best way to detangle hair after you shampoo and condition it is by using a wide-toothed comb or pick. Try to avoid using a hair brush until your hair is almost dry. You can try keeping the damage to the minimum by using a shampoo meant for hair fall. You can use Pantene’s Hair Fall Control shampoo daily as it strengthens your hair from base to tip. Apply your conditioner only on the lengths and ends of your hair and not on the scalp.
